Howtown to Glenridding
This is one of our favourite walks and it is a real treat. It includes a boat trip on Ullswater, courtesy of Ullswater Steamers, followed by a beautiful 6.5 mile walk. Plus it has the most amazing views.
We always park in the car park at Glenridding and take the steamer from Glenridding to Howtown. We then walk back to Glenridding, because that way, there’s no need to worry about Steamer times. There’s a story why we always do it this way round!!
The walk forms part of the Ullswater Way, which is a 20-mile loop around Ullswater.
The 6.5-mile Howtown to Glenridding section follows a clear path from Howtown pier, back to Glenridding, with the most amazing views of Ullswater and the surrounding mountains. If you are lucky you may get to see Scalehow Force, a waterfall on your left as you head towards Scalehow Woods on your right. A majority of the walk is on an easy trail path, however a few sections are rocky, and can become slippery when wet.
There are various picnic spots along the route, most notably Sandwick Bay. Refreshments are available from Glenridding and Howtown at the start, and Lowther Barn cafe en-route, subject to opening times.

Howtown – Waternook – Georgie’s Crag – Hallinhag Wood – Sandwick – Scalehow Beck – Long Crag – Silver Crag – Side Farm – Patterdale – Glenridding
Longer Options
If you would like a longer walk, at the start, you could walk to, and up, Hallin Fell, where at the top you get breath-taking views of Ullswater and the valley below. Alternatively, you could add on a walk to Aira Force at the end.
