Back in 2006, we stayed in a self‑catering cottage where it was clear the owner had given little thought to the standard of accommodation they were offering. Oddly enough, that disappointing stay planted a seed. It sparked a dream, and Howscales is the realisation of that dream.

We had always loved North Cumbria, but it was in 2007 that we truly fell for Kirkoswald and the Eden Valley, after buying a tiny one‑up, one‑down cottage in the village.

Howscales sat along one of our regular running routes, and every time we passed, it caught our eye. We would slow down, admire the buildings, take in the peaceful setting, and imagine how wonderful it would be to own somewhere like it. The charm, the views, the tranquillity, everything about it felt magical.

In April 2016, we took the leap. We left our hometown of Leicester and moved into Howscales, determined to bring that long‑held dream to life. Since then, we’ve worked tirelessly to modernise and enhance the cottages while preserving the character that first captivated us. It has been, in every sense, a labour of love.

We care deeply about what we do. Cleanliness, comfort, décor, furnishings, every detail matters to us, because we want every guest to feel genuinely looked after. From your first enquiry to the moment, you head home, we personally manage every aspect of your stay to ensure it’s smooth, relaxing, and memorable.

Our hope is simple: that you arrive, exhale, settle into your ‘home from home,’ and love Howscales as much as we do.

We’re onsite if you need us, but equally mindful of giving you complete privacy when you don’t.

Adrian balances a full‑time role at a manufacturing company in Wigton while helping with the day‑to‑day running of Howscales in the evenings and at weekends.

In our spare time, we keep active with long walks with our dog, Rosie, and we both enjoy running and cycling, entering various local events as they arise.
